Sit and Stay Awhile in Our Garden

A Blossoming Oasis of Learning: Our Nurturing Montessori Garden

Can you hear the soft buzz of bees, the flitting dance of hummingbirds, the gentle flutter of moths and butterflies? Welcome to the living classroom in our Montessori school’s garden, where the cycle of the seasons unfolds before our children’s eyes. We invite you to sit, relax, and savor the beauty of nature from our newly installed garden benches.

In the heart of September, the Northwoods Montessori community was thrilled to witness the fruition of a heartfelt project. Max Brown, a cherished alum from the class of 2013, returned to our school’s verdant front garden with a mission. Alongside him were fellow Northwoods alumni, Ethan Hudock, Class of 2017, and the dedicated Will Tate, together forming a team that beautifully represented the Montessori spirit of collaboration and lifelong learning.

Max had been meticulously nurturing this project for several months, demonstrating the independence, problem-solving skills, and creativity that are hallmarks of a Montessori education. With a vision firmly rooted in his heart, he took the lead in planning, managing, and executing the project – qualities that underscore the leadership fostered in our Montessori classrooms.

With precision and care befitting an artisan, Max handcrafted three stunning benches that now grace our garden, creating a serene space for observation, reflection, and connection. As an embodiment of the Montessori belief in the integration of art, work, and beauty, he and his scout troop painted these benches, infusing them with character and charm.

But the transformation didn’t stop there. Soil was turned and tenderly prepared by these young stewards of the earth, creating a nurturing bed for a delightful variety of perennials – hostas, heucheras, ferns, and the striking elephant ears. These plants now enhance the aesthetic of our garden while providing a hands-on exploration of botany for our students.

When the last plant was nestled into the soil and the final strokes of paint had dried, the scout troop stepped back. In that moment, they reveled in the harmony of their shared endeavor and admired their magnificent gift to Northwoods – a testament to their friendship, dedication, and respect for their Montessori roots.

Max, we stand in awe of your leadership, commitment, and the love you’ve shown for our Northwoods community.

We express our deep gratitude not only to you but also to your troop and your parents, who have undoubtedly fostered your sense of initiative and community service. This garden, teeming with life and learning, is a testament to the enduring values that underpin a Montessori education – independence, love for nature, leadership, and community.

We are truly proud of you!
