Attention?—Yes, with Free Choice and Interesting things to do.

When you have solved the problem of attention of the child, you have solved the entire problem of education. Maria Montessori addressing the National Education Association, Oakland, California 1915

It’s said that someone asked Maria Montessori whether her school was “that one in which children do what they like,” and, before she could answer, one of her students replied, “Well, I don’t know if we do what we like, but we like what we do.”

Choosing three colors for a Metal Inset design from among many is a delightful task!

Choices are available, depending upon one’s lessons presented.  If you have had a lesson with a material, you may choose it.

Here's a boy who's just had a lesson on unbuttoning and buttoning with one of the Dressing Frames. He's paying attention to the fact that the button turned on its side is easier to get out of the buttonhole.

Do we pay attention to the teacher?  Yes, when called to a lesson.  Mostly, we just pay attention to what we’re doing.

This girl has listened to the teacher, who just reminded her go put her "other hand" behind her back while ironing.

We like our class partly because we’re not constantly asked to “pay attention” to anything in particular, leaving us free to choose work and really take the time to experiment and practice.

This boy took a long time making sure the needle was coming up in just the right place, before putting it through the fabric and pulling the thread with it.

Paying attention is not something we set out to do, really, but something that just happens when we get involved in a project that’s interesting.

This girl is practicing the names of the parts of a horse while repeatedly removing and replacing them into a puzzle frame.

Of course we pay attention to our friends when they tell us something important.

These children are talking about the fact that they need one glass for each person at the table, and so. . .how many glasses?

Sometimes, we pay attention to something that doesn’t require all our effort while we settle in for the day and think of what we’re interested in doing next.

Sometimes, we just have to pay attention to get something to look just like we want it,—something like writing, or embroidery.

Accuracy also demands attention.

Sometimes, it’s true, we pay attention to something because it’s just irresistibly attractive.

Sorting objects in shiny red bowls is fun, not only because of its appearance, but its feel and the sound the objects make against the surfaces of the glaze.

And, no matter how many times we review the Sandpaper Letters, we love to trace them for their appearance and for the rough and smooth ways they feel.

Are we paying good attention?  Pay attention to this: we like to be free to choose, we like to embrace an experiment, and we like to practice something we know how to do.

Thank you for paying attention to our blog.
