22 Days to Kwanzaa

What's new? It's 22 days to Kwanzaa.

What’s new? It’s 22 days to Kwanzaa.

Since Kwanzaa is celebrated during our Winter Holidays, we celebrated our own this week.  “Jambo!” is the greeting. “Habiri Gani” or “What’s the news?” or “What’s new?” is the reply.  Here’s what’s new at Northwoods:

First we lit the candles and repeated the words and the meanings of each, . . .

First we lit the candles and repeated the words and the meanings of each, . . .

. . .then, we feasted and danced. . .

. . .then, we feasted and danced. . .

. . .and, finally, we played "Segura."

. . .and, finally, we played “Segura.”

After lighting candles and dancing, for our Kwanza Karamu today, we played Sengura: “Sengura, Sengura Ya Samora. . . .Ya, Ya, Ya, Ya, Ya Ya-Ya-Ya!” We tried to pass along that Sengura as fast as we could, to avoid holding it as the verse ended. We laughed a lot over that!

Can you light a candle?  Do you like to dress up and dance and play games?  Then, you just might like celebrating Kwanza!
